5 Songs About Murder and Other Crimes
Compiled by Robert . Waters
Music is one of the great inventions of humankind. Here are five of my favorite songs about the darker side of our human experience.
There are hundreds of versions of this folk song on the internet. I believe I published Tony Rice's version awhile back. I've always liked this version by Olivia Newton-John. Maybe it's because the killer is a woman. I like the phrase of her victim: "I'm not prepared for eternity." I used to have a 45 record of this recording.
This song was written by Lester Flatt and his wife under aliases. It was popularized by Flatt and Scruggs. I love this Billy Strings version.
Lloyd Price wrote numerous hit songs, including the rock anthem, "Lawdy Miss Clawdy." This, another one his big hits, is his version of an old folk song.
Written by Ronnie Van Zant and Jeff Carlisi of the great rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, they said this song was heavily influenced by Merle Haggard.
You gotta go to the end to realize that a murder is about to take place. One of my favorite songs.
