When Will Pamela Butler’s Killer be Executed?

Justice overdue…
by Robert A. Waters

The federal government has a poor record of carrying out executions.  Only three men have been put to death since 1988: Timothy McVeigh, terrorist mass murderer; Juan Raul Garza, mass killer; and Louis Jones, rapist, kidnapper, and killer.

Hell impatiently awaits another 59, including Keith Duane Nelson.

The U. S. Court of Appeals published a summary of his crimes: “On October 12, 1999… ten-year-old Pamela Butler was rollerblading in the street near her residence in the same area.  Nelson parked his vehicle at the side of the street and lay in wait.  As Pamela skated near the slightly ajar door of the truck, Nelson quickly jumped out of the truck, grabbed her around the waist, and threw her into the truck.  Pamela’s sister, Penny, observed the kidnapping and saw her sister struggling with Nelson in the cab of the truck.  Several witnesses also observed the kidnapping, one of whom gave chase in his own vehicle.  Although Nelson eluded him, the witness was able to write down the license plate number of the truck—Missouri plate number 177-CE2.  Several other eyewitnesses verified the truck license plate number.

“Later that evening, the custodian of the Grain Valley Christian Church in Kansas City, Missouri, and his wife saw a suspicious white truck with Missouri license plate number 177-CE2 parked in the church lot.  The custodian’s wife wrote down the plate number and noticed an afghan in the front seat of the truck.  They contacted the police after seeing the kidnapping story on the ten o’clock news and informed them of the location of the truck.  When the police arrived at the church, the truck was gone.

“The truck was found abandoned the next day in Kansas City, Missouri.  A police dog that had been provided with some of Pamela’s clothing was dispatched to Nelson’s mother’s house and alerted to an afghan found inside the residence.  That same day a large manhunt for Nelson commenced.  On October 14, a civilian employee of a police department spotted Nelson hiding under a bridge.  After he was spotted, Nelson went into the river and attempted to get away.  When he made it back to shore, he was surrounded by railroad workers who detained him until the authorities arrived.  After the authorities arrived, an onlooker shouted, “Where is the little girl?”  Nelson turned to an officer and stated, “I know where she’s at, but I’m not saying right now.”  His capture was broadcast live on television.  The next day the police found Butler’s body in a wooded area behind the Grain Valley Christian Church.  That discovery was broadcast on local television, and the United States Attorney held a live press conference from the discovery site.  Subsequent investigation revealed that Pamela had been raped and then strangled to death with wire.  The DNA in seminal fluid obtained from Pamela’s underpants matched Nelson’s DNA.”

A few days before snatching Pamela, Nelson had attempted to abduct Michanne Mattson, 20.  The pretty medical student fought for her life, refusing to enter his truck even though she had been handcuffed.  After hand-to-hand combat that seemed to go on forever, Mattson escaped.

Nelson, a career criminal who had recently been released from prison, was tried in federal court because of the Lindbergh Law—the kidnapping took place in Kansas but the murder was committed in Missouri.

KMBC.com reported that Nelson’s execution has been delayed because the government claims it has a “lack of funds to pay for the [appeals] of poor people charged with federal crimes.”

(Imagine that—the U.S. government can spend $175,000 “to determine if cocaine makes Japanese quail engage in sexually risky behavior,” but they summarily delay executions because, as KMBC.com reports, “federally funded lawyers don’t have the money to pay for travel and witness fees.”)

Pamela’s mother, Cherri West, figures it’s time for the Feds to quit playing around and execute this monster.  “This has gone on long enough,” she said.

I agree.

This poor child and others who have been murdered by the hands of these MONSTERS who still go on living as though nothing is different other than the fact they are in jail is a real shame.. these poor babies never got a chance to show people who they could have become because of these MONSTERS, yes MONSTERS, because of the deeds these they think up and inflict one the very ones the capture..

Sorry for being long winded on this, but to take the life of an innocent child is just the most disciple thing anyone can do..

  3. IT'S AUGUST 5, 2015 3:05 a.m. TONIGHT I WAS ON -- U-TUBE -- FBI CASES AND THE CASE OF KEITH NELSON CAUGHT MY ATTENTION. I GOOGLED HIS NAME TO SEE WHAT IS ON THE WEB.. I POSTED SEVERAL COMMENTS. THE FEDERAL COURTS ARE WRONG ABOUT HIS CASE. WHEN HE WAS TRIED HE WAS COMPETENT, KNEW WHAT HE DID and RECEIVED EFFECTIVE DEFENSE ATTORNEYS. THE DEFENSE ATTORNEYS CLAIM THEY NEED TO SUMMON ABOUT 15 WITNESSES TO SHOW KEITH WAS MENTALLY UNSTABLE. HE IS A SERIAL RAPIST and KILLER OF CHILDREN AND OTHER WOMEN. ONE WOMAN GOT AWAY BECAUSE SHE FOUGHT HARD WHEN KEITH TRIED TO PULL HER INTO HIS TRUCK. I ALERTED THE FEDERAL COURT IN KANSAS CITY, KANSAS, THAT I'LL CUT A CHECK IN THE AMOUNT OF $ 2,000 TO HELP PAY COSTS OF THOSE GAME PLAYING DEFENSE ATTORNEYS. THE FEDERAL COURTS SHOULD RECOGNIZE THAT THE DEFENSE ATTORNEYS ARE USING TACTICS THAT SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED. KEITH NELSON IS 40. THE SOONER HE IS EXECUTED THE WORLD WILL BE A BETTER PLACE !!!! 8. If they stop spending money on the death row inmates for 20 years plus in the prison system, they would have plenty of money available to allocate for future cases.... On the other hand, with all the beatings, threats and possible rapes he's no doubt experienced while locked up, I guarantee he's no longer thinking it's easy to kill a little girl now.

When a case is as clear cut as this one was, there shouldn't be any appeals allowed or needed. It should just be straight to the execution after court. I'm confused as to why America taxpayers pay for these types of people to live, there victims didn't get that choice.

  9. Why doesn't Donald Trump pull the lever on the asshole?

  10. I agree. There needs to be a way to expedite cases such as these, where the evidence is indisputable and there’s zero possibility of innocence. It would save the taxpayers SO much money and save the victims families many years of frustration and torment. 2-3 years on death row should be plenty of time to get through any red tape before execution.

  11. I just saw this case on FBI: Criminal Pursuit. What bothers me so much is why that witness the one who pursued him just after she was grabbed, why he didn't stay on that trucks tail? How could he let him get away he was in a car the guy was in a truck trying to hold a 10 year old down? It's easy to say in hindsight but if someone grabbed my kid there's no way I would have let that truck out of my sight. I would have been on the phone to the cops that girl would have been alive today. Now the family wait to execute that monster, just get it done and save the taxpayer. Geez how hard is it?

    1. It's more difficult than the chases you see on TV and in the movies. The kidnapping occurred in late afternoon. That is the time many people are going home from work. I lived in the Kansas City area and the commuter traffic can be brutal.

The neighbor was not a police officer. He couldn't continue the pursuit without risking the safety of other drivers. He did an amazing job getting the bad guy's vehicle description and license plate number. Give him a break.

    2. He was trailing the truck on the highway & couldn't keep up with the high speed. The mother was holding a infant baby when she ran outside TRYING to stop the truck. Cell phones weren't readily available in the 90's

  12. How bad would you feel if you were the guy chasing him at the time of the abduction? I would have stayed on that guys tail, through red lights, over hills and through fields if need be. She would have been alive today if he had stayed the course and had the cops on their way. Now I say just kill the monster, this world is way too good for him.

  15. Keith Nelson should have ben executed long ago. Keeping vermun like this alive is beyond me. The United States dithers about too much on death penalty cases. It likes to let the world know that it's tough on heinous murder crimes. There are about 3500 on death row in America today. Why have they been on death row so long? The appeals system favours all the greedy defence lawyers who couldn't give a damn about justice, only lining their own pockets by prolonging these appeals,

  16. AND this monster, mosquito, rat is sitting in a prison DEATH cell probably laughing his head into oblivion BECAUSE WE ARE SUPPORTING HIM...CLOTHES, FOOD, DENTAL, MEDICAL, HOUSING, EDUCATION AND "MAID CLEAN UP SERVICES"...the law has to be changed...when they are caught so completely and sentenced to death - WIRE him up and send him to SATAN...he'll probably enjoy it.

  17. It costs $71,000 per year to incarcerate an inmate in prison which is up by about $22,000 last year...we have ALREADY supported him with $1,420,000 - that's ONE MILLION, FOUR HUNDRED TWENTY DOLLARS...Just how many people are on death row now...2,705 inmates on DR which amounts to $3,841,100,000 MORE THAN..
THREE BILLION EIGHT HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR...I could use the $72,000 per year and be a LOT MORE PRODUCTIVE!!! How about YOU...I think it's time we rethink this prisoner death penalty thing again...

  18. Something to consider before bashing the neighbor. Very few people had cell phones in 1999 and KCK is very low income so it is unlikely that anyone had a cell phone then.

  19. I just saw this on FBI show on Netflix.
I cant understand why people are given the death penalty if they can never carry it out.
There is nothing to appeal, he should be killed and the people defending him too

  20. He needs to be put tip death so that Pamela Butler can have true justice.

  22. I'm watching this now on Justice channel. My heart is just broken for this little girl and her poor family. I'm not a violent person, but I totally agree with you... I'd get the justice she deserves...with a quickness!! This government is unbelievable when it comes to punishing these monsters!! Maybe someone will "take care of him" while he's in there. It's just Wrong for him to STILL be taking up space and wasting air!!
I hate thinking of what her last moments were.
Bless her little heart. I know God will get him...but he's been eating, drinking, breathing, sleeping, and LIVING with FREE everything for far too long. These people live Scott-Free, while WE pay for all they need for the rest of their lives!! It's crazy!!

  23. Just saw this story on the justice network. Is this s.o.b. Monster dead yet. I can’t believe it’s been a year since they appealed the Monsters death penalty and I can’t find anything that they finally snuffed this s#%@ bags lights out.

  24. They need to get medieval and executing painful executing this waste of oxygen! What needs to be done is to reinstate death by public hanging like in the 1800's so they can experience the fear. Hangings should be done within a couple years in order to fast track appeals and remove the comfort of living 20 or 30 more years on other people's expense.

  25. If I were a family member awaiting justice to be carried out, I would feel bitter and resentful of the system failing my slain family member and myself too. It would almost be better to do away with the death penalty altogether if the system is just going to string families along waiting year after year. Were I a witness to an execution that took over TWENTY YEARS to carry out and asked “was justice carried out today?”, I’d reply, “no, I had to wait over twenty years to watch a depraved monster get an injection and die in his sleep, he lived another 20+ years after committing the heinous crime”. Doesn’t seem like justice to me.

  26. This piece of garbage finally has an execution date. August 28th, 2020.
Justice will be served for Pamela and her family.
